The church and cloisters were founded in 1213 by Saint Francis. The saint often spent time in a cave near Narni, a charming village in Umbria Region, in order to pray. There is a story attached to the place whereby he once took ill here and was visited by an angel who invoked beautiful violin music to soothe him.
"More souls of the dead from purgatory, than of the living, climb this mountain to attend my Masses and seek my prayers."
“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”
St. Francis of Assisi
