DESCRIPTION This tour will bring you into the town of Assisi, best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy, founder of the Franciscan order, and one of the most popular Catholic saints in history. Assisi has been a major Catholic pilgrimage destination for centuries and is today one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy. You will spend here two nights and you will have the chance to see the town in the evening, when most of the tourists left and you can enjoy the unique atmosphere of its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines. Greccio is a spectacular sancturary, perched on a slope of a hill, where St Francis created the first crib in history in 1223. Spoleto is a medieval hill town in Umbria, famous for its summer music festival. The Duomo was built in the 12th century and it is one of the many monuments that the town can offer. Orvieto has a stunning Cathedral and it is famous for its wine and pottery. You will also visit the church of Saint Christina in Bolsena, where the Eucharistic Miracle occurred in 1263. You drive along scenic roads in Umbria, that is called the "green heart of Italy" |

ITINERARY
Day 1 Rome-Spoleto-Assisi
Departure to the Sanctuary of Greccio, where St. Francis is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223. The sanctuary is in a spectacular position on the slopes of a mountain overlooking the “Holy valley”, rich in churches and shrines. Lunch in a typical Umbrian restaurant, where you can taste the products of the region. take a nice walk in Spoleto, famous for its summer music festival. Visit the Cathedral, which houses one of the two holographs we have in Francis’ own handwriting, the "Letter to Brother Leo". Walk on the Bridge of Towers for breath-taking views of the valley and gorge below. Continue to Assisi and settle in your hotel. Dinner and overnight
Day 2 Assisi
After breakfast you have a private guided tour in Assisi and visit the St.Francis Basilica, with the famous frescoes, the Basilica of St Clare and the town center. You continue to the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels, with the little church where St Francis founded the Franciscan Order. The Rose Garden where roses without thornes are grown is also very impressive. An important stop on the pilgrimage to the Franciscan holy city is the Church of San Damiano, which is the site where St. Francis first received his miraculous calling in 1205 and where St. Clare died in 1253.
In the afternoon visit the Carceri Hermitage. In addition to the atmosphere, the Hermitage is well worth visiting to for its medieval architecture and art and several sites associated with episodes in the life of the saint. See the oratory, a small friary and the grotto of St. Francis, where the saint prayed and slept on a stone bed while on retreat toward the end of his life
Day 3 Orvieto-Bolsena-Rome
Depart to Orvieto, where you will have time to stroll on the small cobbled streets and see the extraordinary Cathedral, which houses the blood-stained altar cloth of the Eucharistic miracle and the fortress, from where you have an amazing view over the valley below. Enjoy a brunch with the famous Orvieto wine in the Etruscan excavations, which date back to 2000 years ago. Walk through the storage rooms and the wine cellars, which were used by the Etruscan once upon a time. Then you will head to the village of Bolsena and visit the church where the Eucharistic miracle happened. Drive along the Bolsena Lake to Rome, where you will arrive in the late afternoon
